Highline Botanical Garden, SeaTac, Washington

In the eye of the beholder, one sees either a weed or a flower and from a vacant two-acre lot engulfed by massive, tangled blackberry bushes, junk, and other community detritus, came the concept of a ten-acre park to be named Highline Botanical Garden.  The foundation for the garden began as a need to find a home for a private well-known garden (featured in Sunset magazine) and a nursery with a private Japanese garden.  These properties were to be demolished to make way for the third runway for Sea-Tac Airport and belonged to Elda and Ray Behm and the Seike family.

Since 2000, the garden has expanded from the original plantings from Elda and Ray’s Paradise Garden and the Seike Japanese garden to include display beds featuring plantings of iris, roses, fuchsia, peonies, and daylilies.  The beds are fully maintained by the societies dedicated to those planting, including daylilies nurtured by the Puget Sound Daylily Club.

Here the Puget Sound Daylily Club, a Region 8 member of the American Daylily Society provides the public with a collection of daylilies that demonstrate their beauty, versatility, longevity, and easy maintenance.

The display bed invites garden guests to enjoy, find delight in and explore the diversity in form, height, and color of the daylily. These beauties are not just your great grandmother’s yellow daylily. The garden is in bloom mid-June to the end of July.
