History

Founded in 1946, the American Daylily Society (American Hemerocallis Society, Inc.) is a non-profit organization committed to advancing the beauty and cultivation of daylilies (Hemerocallis). From its earliest days, the Society has worked to unite gardeners, hybridizers, and enthusiasts in sharing knowledge and appreciation for this remarkable perennial flower. With more than 4,100 members worldwide, the Society continues to promote education, encourage gardening excellence, and support the ongoing improvement of daylilies. Over the decades, our mission has remained constant—preserving a legacy of passion and progress that continues to shape the daylily community today.

Recognizing those who have shaped the history of our Society

Our National Convention – An Annual Event!

In-person gatherings have been part of the American Daylily Society since the 1940s, when daylily popularity grew through seed company newsletters and garden media. Inspired by the Henry Field Seed Company’s “Round Robin,” members organized the Midwest Hemerocallis Society, soon hosting conventions and publishing a journal. Since then, national conventions have continued annually in cities across the United States, honoring our roots and celebrating the daylily community.
